The Kitchen Dilemma

The house that we’re buying has several issues with the kitchen. While I plan to post more extensive photos after we close, I’ll go ahead and share one photo of the kitchen:

The kitchen has some nice features – the cabinets are lovely, as are the dark granite countertops.  Now, here are the issues:

The first problem is that this is NOT a fully functional kitchen. As with many foreclosures, the owner has removed a lot of items in the house, such as the wall oven, warming oven and cooktop. However, it does have a working dishwasher, icemaker and refrigerator, although the fridge is old and literally rusty so we will have to get rid of it. So we will have to buy a number of new appliances.

The second issue is the kitchen layout. For a house this size, the kitchen is rather small and cramped, without much counter space for doing prep work. It looks as though years ago the owner took in part of the back porch and made it into the kitchen.

In fact, the lintel over the opening to the kitchen (which probably used to be a sliding glass door to the patio) runs THROUGH one of the cabinet doors over the space for the wall oven…I mean, they literally cut out the upper left quadrant of the left cabinet door to fit that cabinet in place – it’s the craziest-looking thing!

The placement of the fridge is another layout problem – it’s just outside the room you see in the picture.  Technically, it’s IN the family room – it makes for a very odd look.

So there are the issues – missing appliances and poor layout.  I must scoot, but tomorrow I’ll share our ideas on how we’ll address these issues – see you later!

  1. Your new kitchen is just gorgeous! I understand what you’re saying about some of the quirky issues you have to deal with though. Had you not mentioned them, I wouldn’t have noticed any of them from the photo. If this were MY kitchen, at first glance, I would have to put in under cabinet lights. The dark granite (although beautiful and fantastically functional) visually, makes it really dark. I love the color of the cabinets and I love the color on the walls too. It looks very similar to what we have one one wall in our living room. Good luck…I’m anxious to hear how you’ll deal with the issues at hand.

The cabinets are a terrific shade…
Sad the previous owners removed items from your new home.
Look on the bright side, you can now pick your favorite gadgets. 🙂
