It occurred to me that it might help my readers follow our progress if you knew what our goals are, especially where there are a number of steps involved in our renovation. So here is an overview of our master plan for the master closet.
It started off as one HUGE closet with some black wire shelving. One of the walls was diagonal, which created some weird angles in the closet:
It was just crying out for some custom shelving to help maximize the storage space. Also, in our last two houses we had separate his-and-her closets and I really, REALLY liked that, so we decided to partition it into 2 spaces – plus it gives me my own private space to hide Christmas gifts 😮 So here is what we want the master closet to look like:
Here’s our step-by-step MASTER CLOSET MASTER PLAN to get from the “before” closet to the “after” closet:
* Move the diagonal wall:
~~~ Demo the diagonal wall in the closet.
~~~ Reframe the closet wall in desired location.
~~~ Relocate the outlet box on the hallway side of the closet wall.
* Move the hallway door:
~~~ Demo the old doorway to the master suite.
~~~ Reframe doorway to the master suite in its new location.
~~~ Trim out hall doorway and install new door
* Move the 2 closet doors:
~~~ Demo the old openings.
~~~ Reframe the new openings.
~~~ Drywall and texture.
~~~ Trim out the doorways.
~~~ Install door panels.
* Reconfigure light switches:
~~~ Relocate switch for her closet and remove his closet light from this switch
~~~ Relocate switch for hallway light and pair with new switch to control his closet light
* Install recessed lighting in each closet
* Remove dangly hall light and replace with 2 LED cans.
* Drywall, tape, mud and texture newly framed areas.
* Install custom shelving in closet
Coming soon, a post to show what we’ve done so far, pictures included!
